He began his career as a junior B MLSO (medical laboratory scientific officer) at Oldchurch Hospital, Romford, in clinical biochemistry before moving to ST Andrews Billericay. He then became a senior biomedical scientist (BMS) at Queen Mary’s Hospital in Sidcup Kent, before moving to North Middlesex Hospital, London as Senior Chief BMS, with responsibility for sample reception, immunology and Clinical Biochemistry. The department won the laboratory of the year award in 2003, due to its early adoption of Lean and working with the private sector to develop the service. In 2016 the laboratory was outsourced to Sonic Healthcare UK as a Health Service Laboratories (HSL) lab. David then became the Head of Laboratory Process Improvement and work on many novel projects supporting the business. David gained his professional Doctorate in Biomedical Science at Portsmouth University in 2010 despite being undiagnosed with dyslexia. David ‘retired’ in 2023 but has returned to Sonic in a part time role as well as working part time for BIVDA (British In Vitro Diagnostic Association) as a scientific and standards advisor. David also taught on the graduate and post graduate Biomedical Science courses at Middlesex University as a visiting lecturer as well as on the automation MSc at Westminster University.
David has his own consultancy, since 2011, speaking on a range of issues nationally and internationally as well as via webinar, writing many articles and expert commentaries on ISO standards and process improvement / Lean.
David was a council member for the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS) representing the London region. David has also been involved in many national and regional projects, such as the National pathology oversite committee, the National Laboratory Medicines catalogue, the Joint Working Group of Quality Assurance, the Knowledge and Skills Framework for pathology, working on the MHRA guidance on POCT in 2010 and finally the Modernising Scientific Careers project with the Department of Health. David is a member of the British Standards Institute ISO TC 212 (Technical committee for laboratory medicine) mirror committee on behalf of the IBMS. Until recently David chaired the mirror committee until his term of office expired. David represents the UK on the international TC committee and has been involved in various standards as project lead or subject matter expert. David was one of the drafting team for the new ISO15189:2022.
